Knowledge Management in Libraries

In 2015, the SLA Congress, the main event of the Slovenian Library Association will be held on September 21 – 23 in Maribor and its theme will focus on knowledge. The views and reflections of invited speakers will be summed up under the title:

"Knowledge Management in Libraries"
(21 – 23 September 2015 in Maribor, Slovenia)

  • Invitation to the lecture: Advocacy Success @ your library, M. Dowling (Sep. 22, 2.00 PM, Univerzitetna knjižnica Maribor, Gospejna ulica 10, Maribor)
  • SEALL meeting (23 -24 September 2015, Ljubljana, Slovenia)
Knowledge management is a term which includes capturing, organizing and restoring information. It is not only important that employees receive information at the right time and in the right place, but also that they explore, use, exchange and share knowledge in a particular environment. The question is whether any of that can be transferred to the library. We, the librarians, tirelessly argue that library has the knowledge and that it shares it with users. Therefore, it is essential to know how to organize and manage the library collection in order to facilitate its use for knowledge sharing between users, i.e. in the social space.

Thus, the focus areas will cover various topics, including collection development policy and its content and economics; processing, cataloguing and presentation of the content of library materials, in particular e-resources on websites and in catalogues; the barriers to access knowledge and its effectiveness for the life of individuals and communities; the continuing professional development and workplace learning for librarians; transfer of knowledge and skills to vulnerable groups, etc.

The speakers of the SLA Congress 2015 will raise issues and encourage our thinking in the common library space. This will also be the starting point for 2016 conference, when the SLA sections will highlight specific aspects and present good practices of this common theme. Creation of a two-year common theme allows sufficient time and opportunities for professional in-depth approach to individual library environments and prevents only surface detection, without an interest and aspiration to take a deeper dive.
Our distinguished guests will be Michael Dowling, ALA, who will present @yourlibrary and knowledge management in the oldest and largest library association in the world, and Sinikka Sipilä, IFLA President 2013-2015, who will speak on Strong Libraries, Strong Societies, IFLA Trend Report and other IFLA issues.

This year's novelty will be placed in the beginning of the programme. Introductory speeches will be given by the winners of the 2014 Čop Award, Mrs Simona Resman and Mr Zoran Krstulović. The Čop Award is more than just a professional certification, for us in SLA, it is an award for life's professional work, and it embodies the highest ethical principles. This year, when we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the professional Code of Ethics we want to emphasise this even more.

Diploma evenings, organized by the Kočevje Library in cooperation with the Municipality of Kočevje, will be supplemented in our professional environment. Therefore, another novelty in this year's programme will be the Diploma afternoons. The selected works representing the completion of the study at the Department of Library and Information Science and Book Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, will be presented. There will be also presentations of three international conferences: QQML, Liber and LILAC.

For the first time, the Congress will be associated with the post conference, which will take place on September 23 - 24 in Ljubljana: The South-European Legal and Related Libraries (SEALL) Meeting.
