The purpose of this study was to investigate collection development quality in Vietnamese university libraries. Specifically, this study investigated the main activities involved in collection development and the negative factors influencing this issue. The librarian’s expectation and reality about collection development were also discussed in this research.
The participants include librarians in 15 university libraries across three main cities in Vietnam. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research was used for data gathering and analysis.
The study found that acquisition, archival conservation and assessment are the main activities in collection development. The results also highlighted that collection development in Vietnamese university libraries faces challenges such as limited funding, inadequate collaboration among librarians and their organizations and ineffective promotion of print and digital resources.
Based on these findings, the study recommended that university libraries in Vietnam should develop collection development programs and implement professional development policies for librarians to manage hybrid collections successfully.
This research opened the scope of collection development by investigating its main activities and identifying negative factors impacting this issue in Vietnamese university libraries. With a lack of previous research conducted on the topic of library collection development in developing countries, this study is expected to fill the gap in regard to Vietnamese libraries.
